When I Said "I Do"......

When I said "I Do" there were no overdue mortgage payments...no high fevers and "I don't feel good's" to wake us in the middle of the night...no special occasions forgotten...angry, hurting words unforgotten.

We stayed together. I don't know why, except maybe I was afraid...afraid no one else would love you like I could — like I do, in spite of the hard times — or perhaps because of them.

Marriage wasn't as easy or romantic as I thought it would be back then.

The people in church that day...they could have told me, but they just smiled and felt proud and happy. Did they know?

Would I, could I, have said "yes" if I really knew what lay ahead of us?

Marriage — my marriage, your marriage — filled with its hard times as well as joyful times endures because within us is a love so strong, a commitment so deep it withstands the test of reality: the overdue bills, the sick children, the forgotten, the unforgotten.

Now that you know about marriage — your marriage, that is, would you still say "I Do"?
